TORONTO (CP) - Health Canada is warning consumers about the international recall of children's jewelry given out free with Reebok shoes. The heart-shaped charm bracelets contain high levels of lead and are linked to the death of one child in Minnesota.

Reebok International Ltd. issued a recall for 300,000 of the bracelets last Thursday.

"These bracelets should be removed immediately from children's reach and disposed of in normal household waste in a manner which is no longer accessible to children," Health Canada said in a statement.

Health Canada said about 6,140 of the bracelets were distributed in Canada between May 2004 and March 2006. There have been no reports from Canada of children being harmed by contact with the bracelets.

The silver-coloured bracelets, which were made in China, hold a heart-shaped charm with the word Reebok engraved on it. They were distributed with various styles of Reebok children's footwear and sold in major shoe stores.

The release said Health Canada inspectors will follow up with the affected stores in Canada to make sure that all the bracelets have been removed from sale.

The department said that if a child was seen sucking or chewing on one of the charms and lead poisoning is suspected, a family physician could order a simple blood test to measure the child's blood lead level.

"If you notice or suspect that a child has swallowed a leaded item, contact your local poison control centre immediately," it added.

The release said that while there is no risk associated with wearing the bracelet, sucking on it or swallowing it could cause serious harm.

In Minnesota, a four-year-old boy died in February after ingesting one of the charms.

Telephone Fraud - I received a telephone call last evening from an individual identifying himself as an AT&T Service technician (could also be Telus), who was conducting a test on the telephone lines. He stated that to complete the test I should touch nine (9), zero (0), the pound sign (#), and then hang up.
Luckily, I was suspicious and refused. Upon contacting the telephone company, I was informed that by pushing 90#, you give the requesting individual full access to your telephone line, which enables them to place long distance calls billed to your home phone number.

I was further informed that this scam has been originating from many local jails/prisons.
DO NOT press 90# for ANYONE !!

The GTE Security Department requested that I share this information with EVERYONE I KNOW. After checking with Verizon they said it was true, so do not dial 90# for anyone!!!!! PASS THIS ON TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW!
